How much can you earn from affiliate marketing? The honest answer is: from a few euros to a regular income, depending on the audience, the product and consistency. This part of the guide covers what affiliate income is made up of, how to calculate it, when it is paid out and how it is taxed in Lithuania.

In short

  • Income = audience × share who click × share who buy × commission.
  • Commissions are paid out after a waiting period and a check, so some time passes between the sale and the payout.
  • Commissions are income: ongoing activity requires self-employment or a company.

What income depends on

FactorHow to increase it
How many people see the recommendationConsistent content, posts that can be found in search, a newsletter of your own
How many of them clickA clear benefit, personal experience, a discount code
How many of them buyA product that suits the audience; the right timing
Size of the commissionProgrammes with a higher commission or more expensive products
Share of returnsHonest recommendations without exaggerated promises

How to calculate possible earnings

A simple formula helps you estimate realistically what to expect:

Formula

Income = number of people who saw the recommendation × share who clicked × share who bought × commission per sale.

For example, if a post is seen by 2 000 people, 3 % click the link, 4 % of them buy, and the commission per sale is 5 €, you will earn about 12 € from that post. This is only an illustration: real figures vary greatly between audiences and products. The product pages on track.lt have an earnings calculator where you can enter your own numbers.

When commissions are paid out

  1. Waiting period – the commission is “pending” until the buyer's right to return the product expires.
  2. Check – the sale is checked to make sure it is genuine: not returned, not a purchase for yourself, no fraudulent traffic.
  3. Payout – confirmed commissions are paid out to a bank account according to the programme's terms.

If the product is returned, the commission is reduced or cancelled. That is why the first payout often comes later than the first sale.

How commissions are taxed

Affiliate commissions are income from an activity. If the affiliate activity is ongoing, it has to be made official, most often as self-employment (individuali veikla) under a registration certificate. The State Tax Inspectorate (VMI) explains the differences between the forms of activity, and for a practical comparison see the ACS.lt article “Self-employment: registration certificate or business certificate”. You can work out your income tax with the personal income tax (GPM) calculator.

When self-employed, you can deduct expenses related to the activity or apply a 30 % deduction from income, and registering as a VAT payer is mandatory when consideration exceeds 45 000 € within 12 months. For your specific situation it is worth consulting an accountant.

How to grow income

  • Create content that keeps being found for a long time: how-to guides, comparisons, answers to common questions.
  • Watch the statistics and do more of what sells.
  • Plan around seasons and occasions.
  • Grow a channel of your own – a newsletter or a community.

Frequently asked questions

How much can you earn from affiliate marketing?

It varies a great deal. Income depends on the size of the audience, trust, the product and the commission. At the start it is usually small.

Why is the commission not paid out straight away?

First the buyer's right to return the product has to expire, and the sale has to be checked to confirm it is genuine.

Do you need self-employment status for affiliate income?

If the affiliate activity is ongoing – yes, most often self-employment under a registration certificate, or a company.
