Data entry work at home: where it really exists and how not to get caught

On this page · 8
“Data entry clerk – work at home” is searched for about 480 times a month in Lithuania, and together with the queries “data entry work” and “transcription services” – considerably more. People are drawn by a simple idea: you sit at home, retype numbers or text and get paid. Such work exists, but it looks different from what the ads promise and is found in different places.
In this part of the guide: what data entry means in companies, where to look for such positions, what the employer expects, how to tell a real offer from a scheme and why there is less of this work every year.
In short
- Real data entry is a position in a company under an employment contract, often with a different title: administrator, order manager, accounting assistant.
- An “enter data and earn” ad with no company name and no contract is almost always a scheme that ends with a request to pay.
- Simple retyping is declining: documents are scanned and recognised by software. What remains is checking, correcting and working with the company's systems.
- Under an employment contract the pay may not be lower than the minimum: in 2026 – 7.05 € per hour or 1 153 € per month for a full-time position.
What data entry really means
In companies, “data entry” is rarely a separate position. Usually it is part of a broader job:
| Where | What you enter | What the position is usually called |
|---|---|---|
| Online shops | Product descriptions, prices, stock levels, photos | Content administrator, catalogue specialist |
| Accounting firms | Invoices, bank statements, cash documents | Bookkeeper's assistant, accountant's assistant |
| Logistics | Orders, waybills, shipment data | Order administrator |
| Clinics, insurance, banks | Customer questionnaires, applications, certificates | Administrator, operations specialist |
| Research and survey companies | Questionnaire answers, transcriptions of recordings | Data operator, transcriber |
So when searching it is worth typing not “data entry” but the titles of these positions, and adding the word “remote”. The table is a general summary, not official statistics.
What “transcription services” are
This is transferring text from one form to another: handwritten notes into the computer, an audio recording into text, a scanned document into an editable file. Such work is more often ordered not by companies but by individual clients, and it is done independently – as a service for which you issue an invoice.
What the employer expects
- Accuracy. One mistake in an invoice number or amount costs more than the time saved. Speed comes second.
- Spreadsheets. Excel or Google Sheets: sorting, filters, simple formulas, finding duplicates.
- Working in the company's systems. Accounting, warehouse and customer management software – you learn it on the job, but you must not be afraid of a new program.
- Confidentiality. You will work with personal data, so you will sign a confidentiality undertaking, and the work will take place in the company's accounts, not in your personal email.
- Independence. Working remotely, nobody stands next to you: you have to notice yourself that the data does not match, and ask.
Why most ads are a scam
For real data entry, the company has to give access to its systems and customer data. That is not done with a person whose identity has not been verified and with whom no contract has been signed. So an ad where you can start work “today, without an interview” contradicts the very nature of the job.
The most common scenarios:
- A fee to get started. You are asked to pay for “training”, a “software licence” or “registration in the database”.
- Tasks in an app. The first few “tasks” are paid in small amounts, then it turns out that to “unlock” higher pay you have to deposit your own money.
- Unpaid “trial work”. You complete a large task which “does not meet the quality standard”, and you receive no pay.
- Collecting documents. You are asked to send a photo of your identity document, your bank login details or to “confirm your identity” via a link you are sent.
Check before you reply
- Are a company name and code given that can be checked?
- Will there be an interview – at least by video call – and a written contract?
- Is the pay made to a bank account, not in “cryptocurrency” or as an “app balance”?
- Is nobody asking for either money or bank login details?
If the answer to even one question is “no”, it is not a job offer.
What the police reports show
Police daily incident reports mostly describe larger cases, so there are no small “fees for starting work” among the cases we have collected. However, the scheme where you are first asked to transfer money and the promised earnings never appear is repeated there every day – only with larger amounts. Below are the latest cases, which we collect from the reports.
How artificial intelligence is changing this work
The simplest part of this work – retyping what is visible in a document – is being automated fastest. Invoices and receipts are recognised by accounting software, audio recordings are turned into text by transcription tools, product descriptions are imported from suppliers' files.
What is left for a person is what software does not do reliably:
- checking whether the recognised data is correct and fixing mistakes;
- tidying up messy sources – handwritten, damaged, incomplete;
- deciding what to do when the data contradicts itself;
- looking after the automation itself: templates, rules, imports.
This is our assessment, not an official forecast. The practical conclusion: if you choose this work as a first step, learn spreadsheets and one field alongside it – accounting, e-commerce or customer service. Typing speed alone will not secure a job.
Contract and pay
When you work remotely under an employment contract, the same rights apply as in the office. Article 52 of the Labour Code provides that when remote work is assigned, the work equipment provided and the reporting procedure are established in writing, and additional work-related expenses must be compensated in the manner agreed by the parties.
The pay may not be lower than the minimum: from 2026 the minimum monthly wage is 1 153 € and the minimum hourly wage is 7.05 €. If you are offered pay “per line entered”, ask to be shown how many lines per hour is realistic, and work out yourself whether it comes to at least the minimum hourly wage.
If you work independently – for example, providing transcription services to several clients – the activity has to be registered. Which form suits you is explained in the ACS.lt article “Self-employment: registration certificate or business certificate”.
If you cannot find such work
There are few real remote positions without experience, and many people apply for each one. While you search, you can earn income in other ways too: sell things you do not need, provide services or recommend products for a commission. The last option requires neither experience nor an initial payment.
Frequently asked questions
Is data entry work at home real?
Yes, but it is a position in a company under a contract, usually with a different title – administrator, order or accounting assistant. Ads with no company name and no contract are usually a scam.
How much does data entry pay?
Under an employment contract – no less than the minimum wage: in 2026 that is 7.05 € per hour or 1 153 € per month for a full-time position. The specific salary is stated by the employer in the ad.
Do I have to pay for training or software?
No. The employer provides the training and the work equipment itself. A request to pay before starting work is a sign of a scam.
Will artificial intelligence replace data entry clerks?
Simple retyping is already declining. What remains is checking, correcting mistakes and working with the company's systems, so it is worth learning spreadsheets and a specific field.
