“Product packer work at home” is searched for about 390 times a month in Lithuania, and “packager work at home” – about another 90. It is one of the most popular “work at home” searches and at the same time one of those where there are almost no real offers. The reason is not that employers do not want to – packing at home simply does not pay for a company and is often not allowed.

In this part of the guide: why that is so, what a typical fraudulent offer looks like from the first message to the lost money, where packers really work and what to do if you have already paid.

In short

  • Transporting goods to homes and back costs a company more than packing in a warehouse, so real offers of this kind almost never occur.
  • Food cannot be packed just anywhere: food handling activity must be registered with the State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT), even when it takes place in a home kitchen.
  • If you are asked to pay for materials, delivery or a deposit, it is a scam.
  • Real packer work is in warehouses and production: under an employment contract, often in shifts, for no less than the minimum wage.

Why companies do not give out packing to do at home

ReasonWhat it means in practice
LogisticsThe goods and packaging have to be delivered, and the packed goods collected. Two extra trips for every batch cost more than the packing itself
Stock recordsThe company has to know where every item is. Goods handed out across flats mean losses that nobody can explain
QualityIn a warehouse the packaging is checked by the shift supervisor. At home it cannot be checked, and a returned shipment costs the seller
HygieneFood, cosmetics and children's goods are subject to requirements for premises and process
EquipmentScales, label printers, film and strapping machines stand in the warehouse, not in the kitchen
LiabilityThe employer is responsible for the worker's safety, and at home it has no control over the workplace

The table is a general explanation of how packing is organised, not a quotation from legislation.

Food is a separate case

Ads often mention packing tea, spices, sweets or nuts. VMVT reminds that everyone who handles food for sale, even in small quantities and in a home kitchen, must comply with hygiene requirements and register this activity with the service. For natural persons a simplified procedure applies only to certain products and quantities.

So a company cannot simply hand out food products to be packed in unregistered homes. An ad offering to do this “without any formalities” is either unlawful or fake.

The scam scenario step by step

  1. The ad. In a social media group or on a classifieds site: “Packers needed for work at home, no experience required, pay per unit”. There is no company name, only a phone number or a link to a messaging app.
  2. The first conversation. The reply is quick and pleasant. You are told that the work is simple and the earnings depend only on you.
  3. The “formalities”. Before the first batch is sent you have to pay: for delivery of the materials, a deposit for the goods, “drawing up the contract” or a training instruction.
  4. The rush. “Three places left this week”, “the batch is already prepared”.
  5. After the payment. The parcel does not arrive, the number no longer answers. Sometimes you are asked for one more payment – for “customs” or “insurance”.
  6. The version with a parcel. The materials arrive, but the finished work “does not meet the quality requirements” and is not paid for, and the deposit is not returned.

One question that shows everything

Ask: “What is the name and code of your company, and will we sign an employment contract before I pay or receive anything?” A real employer will answer straight away. A scammer will start explaining why that is not necessary.

What the police reports show

Police daily incident reports mostly describe larger cases, so there are no “deposits” of a few dozen euros for packing at home among the cases we have collected. However, the principle is the same as in the most expensive schemes: first the money is transferred, and the promised goods or earnings never appear. Below are the latest fraud cases, which we collect from the reports.

Where the real packer jobs are

Packers are needed all the time – just not at home:

  • Logistics and e-commerce warehouses – order picking and packing, often in shifts; extra staff are hired before holidays.
  • The food industry – packing lines in bakeries and in meat, dairy and vegetable processing companies.
  • Manufacturing – assembling sets of products and packing them before dispatch.
  • Temporary employment agencies – short-term work at the seasonal peak.

You will find such ads on job boards and on the website of the Employment Service (Užimtumo tarnyba). They state the employer, the place of work, the schedule and the salary.

What to expect

QuestionA real packer's job
ContractAn employment contract before work starts
PayNo less than the minimum: in 2026 – 7.05 € per hour or 1 153 € per month for a full-time position
Working timeOften shifts; part-time is possible
EquipmentProvided by the employer
Payments from youNone

If it matters to you to work closer to home or for shorter hours, ask about part-time work: the Labour Code allows you to agree on a smaller number of hours or working days, and the pay is then in proportion to the time worked.

If you have already paid

  1. Do not pay anything more. “One more payment and we will return the money” is a continuation of the same scam.
  2. Call your bank. The payment can sometimes be stopped, especially if you get in touch the same day.
  3. Report it to the police via epolicija.lt or by phone on 112.
  4. Save the evidence: the ad, the correspondence, the number, the payment confirmation.
  5. If you sent a photo of a document or entered your bank details, tell the bank about it.

If you want to work specifically at home

Manual work at home is real when you make and sell things yourself: you sew, knit, bake (having registered the activity). If the main thing is simply to work from home, more realistic routes are remote work under a contract, services or an affiliate partnership, where you recommend products and receive a commission. None of them requires paying in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Are there real offers of packer work at home?

Almost none. Packing at home does not pay for companies because of transport and control, and food is additionally subject to registration and hygiene requirements. Real packer work takes place in warehouses and production.

They ask for a deposit for the goods. Is that normal?

No. An employer does not take a deposit from a worker for work equipment or raw materials. A request to pay before starting work is a sign of a scam.

Can food be packed at home?

Only after registering food handling activity with the State Food and Veterinary Service and complying with its requirements. The simplified procedure for natural persons does not apply to all products.

I paid 30 euros and received nothing. Is it worth reporting?

Yes. Contact the bank and report it to the police – reports help stop the scheme even if the amount is small.
