Affiliate expectations: how long until the first sale and why most people quit

On this page · 9
Most people who try affiliate marketing quit after a few weeks. Not because it does not work, but because they expected something else: they posted a link, got ten clicks and not a single sale – and decided it was a scam.
This article is not about how much you can earn, but about how to do the maths so that expectations match reality. All the figures below are calculation examples with clearly stated assumptions. Nobody reliably publishes real “average affiliate income” figures for Lithuania, which is why there are none here.
In short
- Earnings = clicks × conversion × commission. If even one multiplier is close to zero, the result is zero too.
- Out of a hundred people who click, a few buy – often none. Ten clicks without a sale prove nothing.
- In every programme, weeks or months pass between the first sale and the first payout: the commission is held until the return period ends.
- The first months are about building an audience and trust, not income.
The formula nobody likes
monthly earnings = clicks × conversion × earnings per sale
- Clicks – how many people click your links per month. Not how many follow you and not how many saw the post.
- Conversion – what share of those who click go on to buy.
- Earnings per sale – the commission applied to an average purchase.
An example of how these numbers multiply. The assumptions are made up – put in your own.
| Small account | Medium account | Themed website | |
|---|---|---|---|
| People who see the recommendation per month | 800 | 8 000 | 5 000 |
| Click the link | 2 % – 16 | 2 % – 160 | 6 % – 300 |
| Buy, out of those who clicked | 2 % – 0.3 | 2 % – 3.2 | 3 % – 9 |
| Earnings per sale | 4 € | 4 € | 4 € |
| Per month | about 1 € | about 13 € | about 36 € |
The table shows two things. First, a small account with a general audience will most likely earn nothing in the first month – and that is normal. Second, a themed website with smaller but targeted traffic can yield more than a larger account: its visitors came looking for exactly that product.
Why ten clicks mean nothing
If two in a hundred buy, the probability that none of ten people who click will buy is about 82 %. Out of fifty – about 36 %. In other words, even for a recommendation that works well, the first 50 clicks without a sale are an ordinary thing.
So draw conclusions not after the first post, but once you have at least a few hundred clicks in your statistics. Until then you are measuring chance.
How long until the first money
| Stage | What happens | How long it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | You choose a product, try it out, prepare the first posts | Days or weeks |
| First clicks | You collect statistics and see what works | Depends on the audience |
| First sale | The commission is credited but not yet paid out | From a few days to months |
| Hold | Waiting for the return period to end | Usually 30 days or more |
| Payout | Paid once the minimum payout amount is reached | Once a month |
For comparison: Amazon pays out commissions roughly 60 days after the end of the month, and Booking.com – two months after the guest has checked out, and only once the balance exceeds 100 euros. A long wait is not a sign of a bad programme; it is protection against returns and fraud.
A realistic plan for a beginner: the first three months are for learning and audience, with no expectation of income. If after three months of consistent work clicks are still in single figures, the problem is not the programme but what you recommend and to whom.
How much audience you need
The number of followers is deceptive. What matters is not how many people follow you, but how many of them trust you and are interested in what you recommend.
| Situation | What to expect |
|---|---|
| 500 followers who know you personally | A few sales are possible, but this is a one-off reserve |
| 5 000 followers on one clear topic | Steady, though small, sales if the product fits the topic |
| 50 000 followers with no clear topic | Many views, few clicks |
| An article that people find through search | A small but constant flow of people who are already looking for the product |
The most common mistakes
Why people quit too early
- One link and waiting. A single post disappears from the feed within a day. You need a series.
- A product you have not used yourself. The audience senses it, and you cannot answer questions.
- Too many programmes at once. Ten links to ten different things look like a noticeboard.
- Chasing the commission. The highest percentage often comes with a product nobody buys.
- Not looking at the statistics. Without them you do not know whether you are short of clicks or of sales.
- Unlabelled advertising. On learning that a recommendation was paid for, people stop believing the others too.
- Buying through your own link. Such a sale is rejected, and if it is repeated the account is suspended.
What not to promise yourself
- That it is passive income from day one. It becomes passive only once the content has been created and can be found.
- That it will replace your salary within a few months. For most people it is additional income.
- That a link in the profile bio is enough. People buy because of the explanation, not because of the link.
- That you can repeat another person's result. Their audience, topic and timing are different.
If someone promises guaranteed earnings from affiliate marketing in exchange for paid courses or a “system”, that is no longer affiliate marketing. An honest programme does not take money for joining and guarantees nothing.
What to do in the first month
- Choose one product that you have used yourself or can try out.
- Prepare three different posts: an experience, an answer to a common question, a comparison.
- Use a separate link tag for each post so that you can see which one works.
- After a month, look at the clicks, not the money.
- Repeat what brought clicks and drop what did not.
Frequently asked questions
How soon can you earn from affiliate marketing?
The first sale can happen within a few days or within a few months – it depends on the audience. The first payout always comes later, because the commission is held until the return period ends.
How many clicks does one sale take?
It depends on the product and the audience. When working out a plan, it is more cautious to assume that one or two in a hundred people who click will buy.
Can you earn with few followers?
You can, if the audience is topic-focused and trusts you. But the amounts will be small until the number of clicks grows.
Why do I have clicks but no sales?
Most often there are simply too few clicks yet. If there are hundreds of them and no sales, the product does not fit the audience, or the post promises something other than what the person finds after clicking.
Is affiliate marketing a scam?
No. It is an ordinary pay-for-results model. It is a scam when you have to pay to join or when guaranteed earnings are promised.
