Travel affiliate programmes look attractive: a hotel booking costs hundreds of euros, so the commission ought to be large too. In reality Booking.com pays the affiliate not on the booking amount but on its own revenue from it – and only once the guest has already checked out of the hotel.

This article sets out the terms of the Booking.com affiliate programme from the official help centre: how the commission is calculated, when a booking becomes payable, how long you wait for the money and why travel affiliate marketing takes patience. At the end – which other programmes are worth looking for.

In short

  • For stays the affiliate receives 25–40 % of what Booking.com earns from the booking, not of the booking price.
  • The commission is credited only for stays that have taken place: cancelled bookings and no-shows are not paid.
  • It is calculated two months after check-out and paid out when the unpaid balance exceeds 100 euros.
  • Half a year or more can pass between the recommendation and the money – people book trips in advance.

How the commission on stays is calculated

The Booking.com help centre states: the commission on accommodation bookings is calculated on the revenue that Booking.com itself earns from the booking. The affiliate's share depends on how many completed bookings they bring in during one month.

Completed bookings per monthAffiliate's share of Booking.com's revenue
1–5025 %
51–15030 %
151–50035 %
More than 50040 %

The help centre also gives an example: if a booking is worth 100 euros and Booking.com earns 15 euros from it, a first-tier affiliate receives 3.75 euros. In other words, that would be less than 4 % of the booking price.

Booking.com itself warns that rates and terms may change, and the scheme in force is shown in the affiliate's account.

Other travel products

Through the same links a commission is also paid on other services, which Booking.com calls connected trip products.

ProductFor the affiliateWhen it becomes payable
Car rental40 % revenue shareOnce the car has been returned; insurance and extras paid for on the spot are not counted
FlightsA fixed fee of 2.00 per booking (in euros, dollars or pounds)Once the passenger has taken the flight
Attractions and activities30 % revenue shareOnce the activity has taken place and Booking.com has received its commission
Taxis30 % revenue shareOnce the ride has been completed

When a booking becomes payable

The most important rule: payment is made only for completed services. In the case of a stay – when the guest checks out and the stay is confirmed by the accommodation provider. Cancelled bookings, no-shows and fraudulent bookings are not paid.

This matters because a large share of hotel bookings are made with free cancellation. A person may book three hotels and cancel two – in the affiliate report you will at first see three bookings, and one will be paid.

How long you wait for the money

  1. Booking. A person books a hotel through your link – often several months before the trip.
  2. Stay. The guest arrives and checks out; the booking is marked in the report as completed.
  3. Calculation. In the first five working days of the month the commission is calculated for bookings completed two months earlier. For example, April stays are calculated in June.
  4. Credit note. A document is sent with the number of bookings and the amounts; it serves in place of an invoice.
  5. Payout. If the unpaid balance exceeds 100 euros, the money is usually sent within 2–3 weeks of the credit note. If it does not, the balance is carried over to the next month.

Putting it all together: a recommendation in March, a booking for a July holiday, the commission calculated in September, the money at the end of September, if 100 euros have already accumulated. This is not a flaw but a feature of the travel business, yet you need to know it in advance.

How it is paid out

MethodTerms
Bank transferIn euros, US dollars or pounds sterling
PayPalIn euros only; the account must be verified

Why a payout does not arrive

  • the balance has not reached 100 euros;
  • two months have not yet passed since check-out;
  • the payment details contain non-Latin characters – the system accepts only Latin ones;
  • the transfer goes through an intermediary bank – the system does not support such payments;
  • a Wise account is given – commissions are not transferred to it;
  • the booking was made without your affiliate number.

How many bookings you need

A calculation example using the ratio given by Booking.com (3.75 euros on a 100-euro booking in the first tier). This is arithmetic, not a forecast.

Average completed bookingCommission on oneBookings to reach the 100 € threshold
100 €about 3.75 €27
300 €about 11.25 €9
600 €about 22.50 €5

How much Booking.com actually earns from a particular booking depends on its contract with the hotel, so the real ratio may be different. When calculating, leave out cancellations: a cancelled booking yields nothing.

Who travel affiliate marketing suits

A good fitNot a good fit
You write travel itineraries and city guidesYou expect income as early as next month
You have content that people look for when planning a tripYou have only a general account with no travel theme
You recommend places you have been toYou copy hotel descriptions
You can wait half a year for the first payoutThe audience is small and travels rarely

Other travel programmes

Accommodation is only one part of a trip. Sellers of tours, tickets, car rental and insurance also have affiliate programmes. For example, the tours and activities platform GetYourGuide advertises on its partner page a commission from 8 %, paid monthly, and states in its help centre that the commission is credited if the person buys within 30 days of the click.

When choosing any travel programme it is worth asking the same questions:

  • is the commission calculated on the price or on the seller's revenue;
  • is payment made for the booking or only for a service that has taken place;
  • for how many days is a click valid;
  • what is the minimum payout and is it reachable with your traffic;
  • does the programme accept affiliates from Lithuania and pay to a Lithuanian account.

For a Lithuanian audience the travel theme can also be combined with local experiences – tours or events in Lithuania, where the commission is calculated on the ticket price and the event takes place in a few days, not in half a year.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Booking.com pay affiliates?

For stays – from 25 % to 40 % of Booking.com's revenue from the booking, depending on the number of completed bookings per month. It is not a percentage of the booking price.

Will I get a commission if the booking is cancelled?

No. Cancelled bookings, no-shows and fraudulent bookings are not paid.

When does Booking.com pay out the commission?

The commission is calculated two months after check-out and paid out monthly, if the unpaid balance exceeds 100 euros.

How is it paid out to Lithuania?

By bank transfer in euros or via PayPal in euros. Commissions are not transferred to Wise accounts.

Is it worth starting with travel programmes?

It is, if you already create travel content and can wait. For getting your first income sooner, programmes that pay straight after the purchase are a better fit.
