Facebook Marketplace in Lithuania: how to post a listing and sell safely

On this page · 8
Facebook Marketplace is a classifieds section inside Facebook itself: your listing is seen by people in your town and the surrounding area, and messages are exchanged via Messenger. In Lithuania it is searched for about 5 400 times a month. Its strength is local buyers and the fact that you can see who is writing to you. Its weakness is that the listing creation flow has neither a payment nor a shipping step, so you usually agree on payment and handover yourselves, without the platform's protection.
This article covers how to post a listing, what Meta's rules do not allow you to sell, how to get paid safely and how to recognise a scammer. The rules are taken from the Facebook Help Centre and Meta's Commerce Policies.
In short
- Only adults with an active account can use it. Access may be restricted for new and inactive accounts.
- Creating a listing takes six steps, and payment is not one of them. If you enter a price of 0, the item is shown as free.
- You may not list animals, health products, alcohol, tobacco, weapons or counterfeits. Services are listed on Marketplace only in the job listings section.
- The safest deal is in person, in a public place, receiving the money as you hand over the item.
Who can use it
Facebook names two conditions: being an adult and living in a country where Marketplace is available. Access may be restricted if:
- the account is new or inactive;
- you are using an additional profile rather than your main one;
- you have violated the terms of use or the Commerce Policies;
- the system mistakenly took you for a minor – in that case you can confirm your age in the app.
So creating a new account just for selling is not worth it: its access may be restricted, and buyers do not trust an empty profile.
How to post a listing
- In the Feed, click “Marketplace” in the left-hand menu.
- Click “Kurti naują skelbimą” (in English, Create new listing) and choose “Parduodama prekė” (Item for sale).
- Upload photos or a video. Facebook may choose the cover photo itself based on quality and may enhance the photos.
- Fill in the details: title, price, category, condition, description, location. If you are giving the item away, enter a price of 0.
- Click “Toliau” (Next). If the button is grey, one of the required fields has not been filled in.
- Click “Skelbti” (Publish).
When you sell the item, mark the listing as sold – otherwise the messages will keep coming.
What decides whether a listing works
| Part | What to do | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Item + manufacturer + model or size: “Desk, oak veneer, 140 × 70 cm” | “Selling a desk”, capital letters, exclamation marks |
| Photos | Daylight, the whole item, the label, defects, the item next to an object of known size | Photos from the manufacturer's website – the buyer wants to see your item |
| Price | A specific amount, based on similar local listings | “1 €” or “negotiable” – it attracts only the question “how much?” |
| Description | Condition, age, dimensions, whether it can be dismantled, which district to collect from, whether you can deliver | A phone number and exact address in the public text |
What you may not list
Listings must comply with Meta's Commerce Policies and Community Standards, and buyers and sellers are themselves responsible for complying with local laws. The listings rejected most often:
| Prohibited | Examples |
|---|---|
| Animals and animal products | Puppies, kittens, as well as “free to a good home” listings (except for approved animal welfare organisations) |
| Medical and health products | Thermometers, first-aid kits, medical devices, food supplements |
| Counterfeits and pirated copies | Copies of branded items, illegal copies of films, games, books |
| Alcohol, tobacco, drugs | Including tobacco accessories and prescription medicines |
| Weapons, ammunition, explosives | – |
| Documents, currency, financial instruments | Real or fake documents, virtual currencies |
| Recalled products | If in doubt, check the EU's dangerous products system Safety Gate |
| Services | Cleaning, repairs, etc. – allowed only in the job listings section |
If a listing is rejected, you can request a review in the Help Centre. For repeated violations, access to Marketplace is restricted or suspended.
Payment and handover
The listing creation steps include neither payment nor shipping settings – that is left to you. In practice three methods remain.
| Method | When it suits | Risk for the seller |
|---|---|---|
| Cash on handover | Furniture, appliances, anything the buyer collects in person | The lowest. Count larger amounts on the spot |
| Bank transfer on handover | When the buyer has no cash | Hand over the item only after seeing the money in your own banking app, not on the buyer's screen |
| Transfer in advance and shipping by parcel locker | Small items going to another town | Low for you, high for the buyer – which is why an honest buyer will often refuse |
Facebook's list of safety tips is short and worth following: meet in person in a public place, communicate inside Facebook, protect your privacy, check the item before paying or sending an advance, be wary of offers to pay with gift cards. If you notice anything suspicious, the advice is to call off the deal, stop communicating and report the listing or the person.
How to recognise a scammer “buyer”
- Writes within minutes of the listing going up, does not haggle and asks nothing about the item.
- The profile was created recently, with no friends or just a few photos.
- Suggests continuing the conversation in another app or asks for your phone number and email.
- Says they have “already paid via the courier” and sends a link to collect the money.
- Asks you to forward an SMS code you have just received.
- Offers to overpay and asks you to return the difference.
An account number is enough to receive money. Neither the card's CVV code, nor a bank login, nor SMS codes are needed for that.
Real cases from police reports
Listings on social networks are mentioned in police reports all the time – most often the victims are buyers who transferred money in advance:
- Marijampolė county, October 2026. A woman found a listing for pellets on a social network, transferred 620 € and did not receive the goods.
- Tauragė. A man born in 2001 transferred 200 € for an air flow meter found on a social network and did not receive the item.
- Klaipėda. A young man born in 2008 transferred 465 € for a car bonnet offered via a social network and did not receive the item.
So do not be surprised if a buyer refuses to pay in advance – suggest meeting. If you yourself have entered details in a suspicious link or transferred money, call your bank immediately, then report it to the police via epolicija.lt or by phone on 112.
Taxes
Selling your own unneeded belongings is not taxed as long as the difference between the sales income and the purchase price does not exceed 2 500 € a year. If you use Marketplace for regular trading – reselling or selling things you make – that is self-employment (individuali veikla), which must be registered regardless of the fact that the deals are done in cash.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I see Marketplace in my account?
The most common reasons are a new or inactive account, the use of an additional profile or an incorrectly set age. You can confirm your age in the Facebook app.
Can I sell puppies or kittens on Marketplace?
No. Selling animals and animal products, as well as listings for animals being given away, is prohibited, except for approved animal welfare organisations.
Can I advertise my services, for example repairs?
As an item listing – no. Services may be offered only in the job listings section of Marketplace.
The buyer asks me to forward an SMS code “for confirmation”. What should I do?
Do not send it. The code is meant for logging in to your account or confirming a payment. End the conversation and report the profile.
